week 14 Caricatures of students

Self-portrait.

draw the self-portrait of your self
Today's class was in BarnYard. The main goal of this class was to be able to draw self-portrait as well as a portrait of others.

Task 1. Drawing Self Potrait:

Started drawing self portrait from the sample picture of myself. This was of 10 minutes task and mine on still needs to be finished fully. Here I've encountered some major issues with jawline, neck and eyes.

Task 2. Drawing portrait sitting besides

This is the portrait of Emma which I made by sitting beside her. For these types of portrait, Firstly, I like to draw some straight lines and placement for body organs and later draw them in detail. My goal is to draw consistently to become better every time. My current problem is that I tend to draw some time good and sometimes bad.  Which means  I need lots of practice.

Task 3. Manipulating your self-portrait

For this task, I simply used Photoshop Liquify tool to adjust some areas of face. The tool can be handy for retouching images. for the ordinary picture, we should be carful while retouching, we don't want to make it look unnatural and fake, slight adjustment to the tool properties helps a lot.
But for this particular task, It's ok.

This one can be a good example for this task.

Task 4. To draw someone face again.

The following one is the final version of the drawing which I did under 10 minutes.
I was just exploring to come up with some cartoony style character. and I end up making this one.

Summary: Today's class really helped me to draw a real-life character on a Wacom device. What I realize is that I need to be practicing this sort of drawing most often which could be handy for next semester projects.

Week 8 Inking

Week 8 Inking

Oil painting:  We are told to make a group of 3 and develop the concept of what you want to draw using a wax pen considered as an oil painting.

We basically used graphite art style of coloring. Before we begin, we did some google research and found out some picture samples.

The concept was to outline a simple line and curves using the same color and later fill empty space using various colors. Finally, we came with something with proper fillings of different colors.

finishing that I started painting a new portrait of a female adult. firstly I drew some basic shapes that is circle and lines and drew eyebrow lines and drew other facial structure.  Then I started using wax based oil paintings. this was my first attempt and things were going pretty well. I was doing an experiment with different colors although I struggle distinguishing colors. Knowing its proper techniques and methods would add ease to my painting skills, so in future classes, I hope to learn them.

Mountains and jungles where temples and other infrastructures are located.
This would be more like compositing and matte painting, that it would like to
learn in Photoshop.

Magician and legendary filmmaker Georges Méliès used the matte painting technique in many of his films. "In his 1898 film Un Homme de Têtes – Four Heads Are Better Than One. Méliès would use a glass pane painted black to create a matte. When shooting on film, the black matte kept light from reaching the camera. Since a portion of the film was not exposed to light,
it would leave part of the frame empty."

In-depth, It should look realistic in terms of a perspective view, color grade,
Lens distortion

Matte Painting: matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that is not present at the filming location.

Message from the man from the tutorial shown in the class.

Every resource you find you need to write about you which is useful for your next sem or keen about your topic

it's assisting it.

Literature review.
First question,

The example that he is given is just a sample.
The published findings are called literature and the search you do is review.

We can do it in five different steps:

Annotated bibliography.
when background research
Collecting information on the top. Distinguish which are primary and secondary. useful to know what the end point is.

Key point
first start- index citation, author last name and year it was published.
2nd para.
2. reorder paragraphs
Reread all paragraph summaries
find similarities and differences
reorder para into a logical list based on connections yo find.

The best sequence will be the one you find and apply effectively.

Some potential arrangements: Cause-Effect, Myths- Realities, Problem- Solution, Ancient- Modern, Series of Advances, Effective- Ineffective

First para- Solution
problem plus the need for understanding
The reorder paragraph is necessary.

Just be conscious about how much weight are you giving to each summary.

Theme: Use a theme to explore as the first part of the introduction.
first- problem, define, set parameter around it
2nd, its effect

Title your literature review

Separate para summaries from citation
Arrange para summaries in a logical prder.

In class, I randomly went through different articles on my topic Composition, editing, and audio in film. However, I managed to find some useful sources in the college library.

Week 4

Film And Animation History 1905-1915

James Stuart Blackton (USA/UK)
(Born Jan5, 1875, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England- died August 13 1941, Hollywood)

James was a U.S. film director and also produced. He introduced animation and early film techniques that helped shape and stimulate the development of cinematic art. He has also interviewed Thomas Alba Edison in 1895. His first film was The Burglar on the Roof(1897) got popularity which made Blackton a millionaire.
Some of his widely known movies are Sherlock Holmes, Oliver Twist, Salome, Richelieu, Moses and Saul, and David. Later he became the director, cameraman, director and one of the founders of animation.

Humorous Phases of Funny faces, a short film featuring animation by J.Stuart Blackton

This video shows a perfect character animation that was manually drawn by hands. He has drwan some male and female characters carried by a clown playing with dog and his hat. Piano melody can be heard in the background of this video which seems very interesting.

Emile Cohl (France)
A french animator and a caricaturist who was born in January 1857-January 20, 1938) Along with John Stuart Blackton, they formed the foundatioons of the medium in the early 1900s. His animated cartoons are very genuine and is considered as first animator. He gave the concept of adapting comic strip into a regular animated film series. Himself mades a few comics at that time.
His film Fantasmagorie 1908 is considered as the world's first fully animated film.

Cohl will always be remebered for his work in animation. He has inspired earlyu animators like Winsor McCay, Raoul Barre, John Randolph Bray and Paul Grimault.

Martin Thornton (UK)

His films are basically combined with stop motion and live action shots. The origin of first colour animated film which was made with Kinemacolor process was developed by Thorton. Due to limitations and expenses, the system where filter mechanism in the camera exposing frames through color filters are used couldn't be carried out further.
He created In Golliwog's Land (1912)

Winsor McCay
He was born around 1867 and died in 1934 at the age of 67.
Mccay was an American newspaper cartoonist and a pioneer of animated films. He began to work as a poster and billboard artist for Chicago Company at the age of 21. He has created two successful comic strips namely Little Sammy Sneeze and Dream of the Rarebit Friend.
Dream of the Rarebit Fiend by Winsor McCay.

As a self-taught animator, his work has realistic use of perspective, precise lines and intricate designs( having lots of small details which are arranged in a complicated way.) He is also considered as one of the first animators to preview, test and refine the flow of drawings before filming them.
Gertie the dinosaur: fluently drawn animation made out of 10 thousand hand drawings with live action looks

Ladislaw Starewicz ( Russia)(1882-1965)
As a self-taught filmmaker, he has filmed over one hundred movies in Russia and France, which began to stare at the 20th century continuing until his death in 1965. He was a very skilled puppeteer who liked to play with imagination and create interesting films. He got popularity for making embalmed insects the star of his films. He separated the leg and other body parts for different body pose and later reattached with wax.

was a highly successful film at that time which got popularity all around the world.

Week 2

This week we studied about film history and the director from the era 1900-1905. The following research generally summarizes

Segundo De Chomon (Spain)
Segundo de Chomon was a very skilled director regarding the creation of special effects, camera technique, and various film techniques and methods.
one of the famous camera technique he developed is still practiced widely and it is known as  Dolly.
It is a wheeled cart on which the camera is adjusted in order to capture smooth motion perspectives.
Through my studies, though dolly gives a unique perspective it also has some limitations. It seems to look best when the dolly seems to be rolling along a smooth surface. For best results, the dolly tracks are basically laid down either in tracks or in a temporary flat surface such as plywood that the dolly can roll along.

Electric Hotel (1905): This was the breakthrough for the film during this period where stop-frame animation or visual representation was used.
This video is about 6:46 minutes long and it is mostly in Blackwhite. We can see various objects moving from one place to another without human touch or adjustment. objects like shoe brush and shoe polish seem to be self-polishing human shoes. Another shot is a comb, combing a lady's hair plating itself in the same background without any camera cuts.

Alice Guy (France)
Active in the 19th Century, First female filmmaker, Alice was the pioneer for introducing narrative fiction films(a film that shows a fictional or fictionalized story which tends to convince the audience as the happening are real in the film). Mostly Camera movements, lightning, and cinematographic elements seem to be very important for this type of movie genre.
Cinematograph: The first reliable method to project motion pictures shes used film to tell stories.
Close-ups, hand-tinted color, and synchronized sound are some of her film techniques.
The Cabbage Patch Fairy (1896) : This movie demonstrates a folk tale regarding the origin of the babies in an interesting way. A lady surrounded by many huge cabbages sings and places babies on the front floor. ladies expression is very cheerful and her hand's gesture is very subtle.
Alice was a filmmaker of rare sensitivity with a remarkable poetic eye. She has shot beautiful and artistic shots. Her stories in the film are groundbreaking and innovative.

Edwin Stanton Porter (USA)(born April 21,1870, Pennsylvania, U.S. -died April 30 1941,NewYork.
He is an American film director who used dramatic editings such as piecing together scenes shot at different times and places. Most of his technical innovations include,
A close up of the fire alarm being activated, the use of medium and wide shots, dissolves editing techniques between scenes to suggest the passage of time.
Some of his important shorts such as Life of an American Fireman(1903) and The Great Train Robbery.

Winsor Mccay (USA):
Mccay was an American newspaper cartoonist and a pioneer of animated films. He began to work as a poster and billboard artist for Chicago Company at the age of 21. He has created two successful comic strips namely Little Sammy Sneeze and Dream of the Rarebit Fiend.

Dream of the Rarebit Friend by Winsor McCay.

Little Nemo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seOGEwx0NfQ
This short video shows the full animation for numerous characters especially clowns. we can see some the animation principles highly used in these characters such as character turn around, walk cycle, dance and jump scenes, storyboard animation and some stretch effects have been used and looked very organic. I'm highly fascinated by his work and I wonder how he did these effects during that period.

Cecil M. Hepworth ( England)

A longest surviving British pioneer filmmaker Cecil was a very ambitious producer, director, writer, scenic photographer. His film making career began in 1899. He was a filmmaker with a unique visual style.
Some of his technique involves smooth cutting of the film's chase sequence which was unparalleled at the time along with the naturalism of the film.

:  This short silent drama film basically shos a dog who leads its master to his kidnapped baby. Actually, the dog belonged to himself who was stared in. film. Piano music is the main source of melodic background music for this kind of silent film.
